Description
The Fledgling sits on a branch building up his nerve to drop off and test his wings. This sumi-e image is 10X8''
Sumi-e painting, or "ink picture," was developed in China during the Sung dynasty (960-1274) and brought to Japan by Buddhist monks in the mid-14th century. Sumi-e is a style of monochromatic ink painting where the bold use of ink strokes and washes allowed artists to eliminate all but the essential characteristics, from their subjects. Zen Buddhist priests-painters considered sumi-e more demanding than painting with color, as it required more discipline, emphasizing line, shading, and the use of white space and abstraction. The ink is made from carbon or pine soot combined with glue and binders: opaque for calligraphy, transparent for ink painting.
